January is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Make sure you enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather.

Don't forget to look after birds and wildlife. Leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden.

• Give your pots, seed trays and greenhouses a clean
• Plan your vegetables rotation and any flower beds or borders
• Check 'sow by dates' on any packets of seeds you have left
• Don't forget to feed the birds and give them a source of fresh unfrozen water daily
• Prune Apple and Pear trees
